{Q. What should I be doing this month?}

A. Here are some suggestions for February:

  • Annuals: Your cool season flower beds should be coming together. Some will bloom well from now through April while others will save their best for the Spring. Cool temperatures and adequate rainfall usually make watering less important. Make sure beds are well watered whenever a freeze threatens. Drought stressed plants are less likely to deal with subfreezing temperatures easily.
  • Roses: If the bushes are still blooming this can be done any time from now to late February. Continue to plant container-grown rosebushes purchased from nurseries.  Cool to chilly weather and normal rainfall will make it unlikely that you will need to water much this month.  No fertilizer is needed for the rest of the growing season.
  • Lawns: Unless you overseeded with ryegrass, lawns are wonderfully care-free this time of the year. The look of ryegrass is outstandingly beautiful throughout the winter. You will not need to continue mowing throughout the winter, but many people think it is worth it.
  • Shrubs: Plant shrubs in well prepared beds. Avoid planting if the soil is wet. Working wet soil damages it’s structure and can lead to soil compaction. Established shrubs should not need to be watered during this time of the year. Water-in newly planted shrubs throughly, watering occasionally thereafter if the weather is mild and dry.  No fertilizer should be applied to shrubs  this month.
